Youth Cafe

Organisation: The Clay Studio

This organisation was successful!

We are aiming to expand our weekly youth club by opening on Friday after school, running from Madras hall. This would be for secondary school age pupils from S1+, extending access for existing beneficiaries, as well as a drop in for all in the age criteria.

This will take the form of a Youth Café.

Taking a youth led approach as per the Youth Work Framework we will be involving our existing young people from the Wednesday club in the set up of the Friday group, establishing their wants, needs and expectations, utilising the five pillars - expressive, educative, participative, empowering and inclusive.

The plan is that - as schools close earlier on a Friday - this allows young people to somewhere to go after school as an inclusive safe space. The cafe would be open from 1-5pm with staff/volunteers having an hour either side for set up and lock up. (The plan would be to gradually introduce young people into also being involved in this element, to upskill and give responsibility).

We wish to provide our young people with cooking skills, and incorporate higher visibility of healthy food/diet and eating, utilising nourishing food where possible, and providing a variety of food options, with the intent to also cater for vegan/vegetarian dietary requirements.

As well as this, there are extremely limited options for coffee and healthy food after 2pm in the Merkinch area. We would also aim to utilise our produce from our existing studio garden aiding in self sufficiency.

Amount requested: £4,970.96.

Why the contribution is important

Expanding the youth club to include a Friday Youth Café will have a significant positive impact on the local community, particularly the young people it aims to serve. By offering an inclusive and safe space for secondary school students after school hours, the project addresses a critical gap in youth services. This initiative will provide a welcoming environment where young people can socialize, relax, and engage in meaningful activities, reducing the likelihood of them feeling isolated or getting involved in risky behaviours.

Creating the Friday Youth Café will provide young people with a safe, welcoming, warm and inclusive space to hang out after school, upskill secondary pupils cooking abilities, and aid in preparing for adult life.

It also removes pressure from working families that may otherwise have to re-arrange working hours on Friday to get home for their children, by ensuring that they have somewhere to go where this is not possible.

In addition to this it will provide an affordable food option within the community, by the community.

Having a structured place to go keeps the young people surrounded by healthy influences, away from potential risk taking behaviour or gathering in unsavoury locations.

Link to priorities identified for the local area by children and young people:

  • More trusted people in our communities who help to keep young people safe
  • Create safe spaces, more things to do and more choices
  • Youth-led projects, youth empowerment and more trust in young people
  • Learning and activities in the local community.
