Merkinch Primary Holiday Clubs/Breakfast Cafe/After School Clubs

Organisation: Merkinch Primary Positive Community Relationships Hub

This organisation was successful!

My aim is to purchase some resources to provide the children with more activities at Breakfast Café, After School Clubs and Holiday Clubs. Currently I borrow and share items and resources from the school so it would be beneficial to have some resources which always have to be returned. I also would like to run a project with Lisa from Fox's Tales to provide interactive story sessions for our children and their families. We have collaborated in the past but we have never been able to get things off the ground due to lack of funding. An addition to the project would be an intergenerational aspect where we bring groups of children to various old folks homes and groups and they would enjoy the Fox's Tales sessions together. We feel it is essential for our children to spend time with the more senior members of our community in order for them to be brought up showing the respect our elderly folk deserve. Our children would be key in the planning stages of this project so that their voices are given the priority in the organising of it. we feel this fills a gap in the community because there are no other projects of this type currently. We have brought our Christmas Choir to sing for the elderly residents of one local home and they have all benefitted from it so much. To see the joy on the residents faces when children sing is truly amazing. Definitely an avenue worth expanding.

Amount requested: £2,000.

Why the contribution is important

I know that our Holiday Clubs in particular are a huge benefit to our children families especially if the parents are working. They know that their children are safe, being well-fed, nurtured and looked after and enjoying some fun times with their friends. I have been told that the clubs are a "Godsend" especially in the long Summer Holidays. This in turn leads to happier parents and happier, more well adjusted children. I believe that it takes the pressure off too when worrying about getting their children fed which is a huge issue for families at the moment.

Link to priorities identified for the local area by children and young people:

  • Create safe spaces, more things to do and more choices
  • Learning and activities in the local community
  • More trusted people in our communities who help to keep young people safe
  • Access to early intervention and support to help children and young people make positive decisions for their own futures.
