Merkinch Football Academy

Organisation: Merkinch Football Academy

This organisation was successful!

The aim of our charity is to give young people experiencing inequalities and disadvantage/poverty the opportunity to participate in sports, learn new skills, build confidence and motivation and learn life skills such as timekeeping, leadership, team work and discipline in order for them to make positive choices in their lives and fulfil their potential.

We would like to continue our existing activities as detailed in section 12 and also to extend and develop the project in order to provide more opportunities for our young people and increased access to activities in our local community.. The project will run from October 2024 to June 2025. Fifty young people will take part over the course of the project. Activities will include:

  • Football skills training
  • League matches with a range of other football teams
  • One to one mentoring and confidence building.

We would also like to create a new element to the project:

Introducing young girls to football, focussing on primary school age children initially (5 to 11 years). The girls will take part in football training sessions and possibly also league matches. We will work alongside Caley Thistle Women's and Girl's teams which will offer a potential pathway to our participants.

The project will meet the following criteria for young people:

  • Provide a safe space for activities which have a positive impact on young people.
  • Provide positive adult role models.
  • Increased opportunities for learning.
  • Increased opportunities (which are free and easy to access) for participating and interacting with other young people.

Amount requested: £5,000.

Why the contribution is important

The project will deliver the following differences for the young people taking part:

Increased access to activities which help young people to reach their potential - we want to give young people the opportunity to take part in a positive learning experience along with their peers. We want to challenge their negative behaviours into something more positive which in turn will help them to do better at school and improve their choices post school.

Increased opportunities for participating and learning. We will encourage on-going learning as part of the project activities and will signpost the young people to additional learning and participation opportunities in the local area.

Increased opportunities for young people to engage and interact with both their peers and trusted adult role models. The project will bring people together  and will encourage them to build strong relationships - the project will give young people the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and build links with others in their community.

Increased activities for young people which have a positive impact on their physical, mental and emotional health and well-being. The activities will allow young people to build positive and healthy relationships with their peers and with the adult coaches.

Link to priorities identified for the local area by children and young people:

  • Create safe spaces, more things to do and more choices
  • Learning and activities in the local community
  • More trusted people in our communities who help to keep young people safe.
