Domestic Abuse Training

All police forces in Scotland should have complete a programme of training that is specific to domestic abuse and other forms of gender based violence. This should not just be the responsibility of DALOs to get right - every police officer has the opportunity to get it right for women and children each time they respond to a call.

The training should include coercive control, common myths, trauma informed policing and practical information on linking in with DALOs and MARAC referrals.

Why the contribution is important

I am a specialist gender based violence nurse and women repeatedly tell me that they don't feel police take them seriously and that they don't understand this issue. This has consequences for the safety and wellbeing of these women and their children.

I have to say I have had very good experiences with the police in the past in this regard. They have been sensitive, supportive, knowledgeable and willing to help. Keep up the good work. Thank you.
